Frits de Jonge’s students have become teachers at High Schools, Universities, and performers in pro-fessional orchestras. Some became finalists and winners in regional, national, and international con- tests. They include the
1991 William Primrose International Scholarship Competition at the XIXth International Viola Congress, sponsored by the American Viola Society,

Man-Qin Zhang, viola
In 1991 Man-Qin was awarded first place in the annual Young Artist Competition sponsored by the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra. Man-Qin, 20, who competed with Paganini’s Grand Viola Sonata and William Walton’s viola concerto received $1,000.00. She played the Walton concerto with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra in concert and two years later (1993) she was appointed Assistant Principal with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Presently,Man-Qin is Principal Violist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Chris, a native of Florence, SC, won the 1995 Music Teacher National Association (MTNA) Collegiate Artist Competition in violin for the state of South Carolina. The same year he
won the University of South Carolina School of Music Con-certo Competition, performing Tchaikowsky’s violin concer- to with the USC Symphony Orchestra. In1997 he won the Young Artist Competition of the Greater Spartanburg Phil- harmonic, performing Ravel’s Zigane with the Orchestra. He also gave four performances of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1999 Chris was the winner of the Heifetz Institute Violin Competition
and performed as soloist with the Annapolis (MA) Symphony
Orchestra.


Linda Goldstein, violin/viola
Linda, a native of Columbia, SC, has won several competitions while she was a student at the University of South Car-olina. Before graduating with a BA in vio-lin/viola performance in 1973, Linda ap-peared several times as soloist with or-chestras, including twice with the Colum-bia Philharmonic Orchestra. After her ap-pointment as Principal Violist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, in 1981 she joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra viola section, a position she still holds until this day. Linda also is the violist of the Houston Symphony Orchestra String Quartet.

Lauren Burns, viola Lauren, a native of Columbia, SC, gra-duated in 2002 summa cum laude with a Bachelors degree in viola performan-ce. In her senior year she was awarded the prestigious Jacob K. Javits National Fellowship. The award totals $130,000.00. After having served as Principal Violist
with the Valdosta (GA) Symphony Or-chestra, Lauren (Mrs Hodges) joined the music faculty at Florida University.
Caroline Jeffries, violin Caroline, a native of Hartsville, SC, gra- duated in 2006 summa cum laude with a Bachelors Degree in violin performan- ce. She was the winner of the 2005 SC Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Competition and win-ner for the South Eastern Division (nine states).
Presently, Caroline (Mrs Nordlund) is on the violin faculties of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and the Community Music School of the University of Alaba-ma in Tuscaloosa.
Rin-J ong Yang, viola
While working on his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in viola performance, Rin-Jong was invited
to perform at the 1986 Third International Viola d'Amore Congress, held in Austin, Texas. After
graduating with a DMA degree in viola performance, he decided to pursue a DMA in orchestral
conducting. After graduation in 1991, Dr. Yang returned to his native country where he was ap-
pointed Principal Violist with the Korea Symphony Orchestra and joined the faculty at Sungshin
Women's University in Seoul, South Korea. At present Dr. Yang also is enjoying a successful
conducting carriere.

The Well-Tempered Trio
The Well-Tempered Trio with Tim Baker (violin), Kumiko Watanabe (piano) and Idris Chandler (cello), won “First place” in the 1999 Music Teachers National As- sociation (South Carolina Division) Colle- giate Chamber Music Competition and placed “Alternate” in the Southern Divi-
sion (nine states).
